Foreword

The story of the creation of design and the intimacy of colour witth clay_or other words, the blessed relationship beween the creative fingers of the pious and amorous painters of ihis land water, clay and fire, has a background as old as the history of art and culture all over Iran. This old story ; starts with the prehistoric birth and manifestation of form and colour on clay.

 Ah,love!could thou and I with  Fate conspire

To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire,

Would not we shatter it to bits_and  then

Re_ mould it nearer to the Heart's Desire!

There is no doubt,however,that tile art, following such extensive and continued changes, gained such a reputation after a short time that without its presence as a decorative element,iranian architecture specially the religious one could not be manifested so beautifully and gloriously.

There are traces of unknown pinters' talents and thoughts on every fictile bowl, pottery and baluster. They, similar to other historians and thinkers, contributed to history through their paintings on tiles which became a historians fact. The skill still continues after centuries. It is no wonder that even today one can still discover the old story of burnt and moulded clay on this land.

In spite of the fact that it is no longer the work of passionate souls and the pattern and colour on the tile bears no memory of the past or persent and the design is vague and the colour dry and pale,what is important, is the way we observe the old illustration of such outstanding talented design on clay, which manifest as evidence of the national identity of Iranian art that has survived through ages.
